In this video we are going to learn how to use a hollow wall anchor.
This is a very useful bolt that enables you to hang picture frames, mirrors and even a kitchen cabinet on a plaster wall.
This type of bolt increases the surface contact, as once it has been fitted, it opens like a star on the other side of the wall, thus increasing the weight-bearing capacity.
To perform this task, you will need a drill with a drill bit that is fitted to the bolt's diameter, hollow wall anchors, a hammer and a wall anchor setting tool.
There are different types of anchors that vary according to what you intend to hang. For a heavy cabinet, it is best to use a hollow wall anchor setting tool and follow the instruction guide.
If you do not have a setting tool, you can still use this type of anchor bolt, because they are fitted with grips, which stop them from rotating while you are screwing them into the wall with a screwdriver.
Hanging a frame
Start by drilling a hole into the wall with the drill, then insert the anchor bolt into the wall.
Finish inserting it with a hammer.
Then use a hollow wall anchor setting tool to open the anchor inside the wall.
You can now hang your pricture frame and use a spirit level to check that it is straight.
Hanging a mirror
Decide on the height at which you want to hang your mirror and draw out the reference point.
Measure the centreline of the attachment points, meaning the gap between them.
Using a spirit level, find the reference point.
Then, using a ruler and pencil, mark the gap between the attachment points.
Drill a hole into the wall with the drill, then check the level and that it is in line with your points before inserting the hollow wall anchor. At this stage, you can still rectify any wrongly-drilled holes
Finish inserting the anchor with a hammer. Then use the setting tool to open the anchor in the wall.
Now you can hang your mirror.
Mounting a kitchen cabinet
The hollow wall anchors will serve as support when attaching a Z-clip, such as this one, which will later hold up your kitchen cabinet.
In this instance, it is very important that your check the resistanceof the anchor bolts on the packaging so as to safely install the cabinets.
