In this video, we are going to learn how to tie a square lashing. This technique will allow you attach two wooden logs together
Caution, for this task you'll need
Protective gloves and closed footwear
closed footwear
To tie a square lashing, you'll need
A knife
you'll also need
a wedge or block which can be another log
two wooden logs
and 1.5m of string - or two armspans
Tying a square lashing can be done in 2 steps which we will outline for you
Step 1; Assembly
Place the first log on the wooden block
Place the second on top of the first, perpendicular to it.
Keep your back straight as your lower yourself
and 1.5m of string - or two armspans
Make a clove hitch knot on one of the logs, remember to leave around 20cm allownace to finish off the knot
For more on this check out our video on how to make a clove hitch knot
place the string beneath the first log
then over the second
pass the string back under the first log again, maintain tension in the strings and make sure that they are wrapped around perpendicular to the logs
Wrap the string around the logs at least three times in this way for a secure lashing
the strings should lie beside one another when you wrap them around - but they should never cross - to guarantee a secure lashing
Step 2: Tying
Wrap the string around itself - in between the two logs
Pull the string tightly.
Be careful, do not release the tension. It could loosen the entire lashing and cause the logs to slip
Do a basic hitch knot to the finish the lashing - all while maintaing the tension
With the remaining string make a reef knot with the end of the clove hitch knot
Now you know how to tie a square lashing
